Artist's Statement

Fiber has fascinated me since I first learned to sew as a small child at my mother's knee. I have continued to explore the possibilities of threads and fabric by expanding my skills in fabric painting and manipulation, embroidery, beading, crochet and sculpture. No project is complete unless it incorporates many different techniques.

At this time my work is focused on creating contemporary quilts which are often based on photographs I have taken while traveling and usually include three-dimensional fabric manipulations or unexpected embellishments. Other items include elegant purses and whimsical gift items.

Biography
Jane earned a degree in textiles and applied design, then managed a fabric store, leading the chain of 40 shops with the highest sales per square foot. Several jobs in sales and marketing finally led to establishing her own advertising agency in which she developed marketing plans and produced the materials to fulfill those ideas. She served as Marketing Director for a nonprofit association for a few years before finally acknowledging that the only satisfying line of work would have to include fiber.

Currently she is Executive Director of Springwater Workshop, Inc., a nonprofit fiber art school in Alexandria, VA. Springwater offers classes in spinning, weaving, knitting, crochet, felting, surface design, rug hooking and other fiber arts as well as a supply store with yarns, spinning fibers, books and equipment.

Jane creates one-of-a-kind accessories and quilts; teaches sewing and crochet; and has published crochet and sewing designs in many magazines and craft books. She is a past president of the Potomac Craftsmen Guild (260 fiber artists), and is a member of the Surface Design Association, Crochet Guild of America and The National Needlework Association. Her work can be seen at the Potomac Craftsmen (cooperative) Gallery in the Torpedo Factory of Alexandria, Va. and at various juried shows nationwide.

Short Hill Studio is nestled at the base of the Short Hill Mountain in northwestern Virginia, about 50 miles from Washington, DC. All work is supervised by felines Sam, Karma and Daisy.
